Garden Design in Harpenden

Garden Design for Harpenden Homes

If your garden feels tired, awkward to use or no longer suits the way you live, our garden design service in Harpenden can help you make better use of your outdoor space. From complete redesigns to planting plans and practical layout improvements, we create gardens that are attractive, usable and tailored to your home.

I first met Kev from Herts Tree & Garden when his team carried out work on my own garden, and I was so pleased with the results that we soon began collaborating on garden design and landscaping projects across Harpenden and the surrounding areas. With my qualifications in Garden and Planting Design from Capel Manor, we now offer a joined-up service that combines creative design with practical landscaping experience.

With a background in interiors, art and design teaching, I bring an eye for colour, texture, proportion and structure to every garden. My focus is always on creating outdoor spaces that look good throughout the year while still working properly for everyday life.

Whether you want a family-friendly garden, better planting, improved seating areas, a more usable lawn, or a complete garden redesign, we can help create a plan that suits your property, lifestyle and budget.

Garden Design in Harpenden – The Process

STEP 1

Initial Consultation

We start with a free initial consultation in your garden. This gives us the chance to understand how you use the space, what is not working, your preferred style, and what you would like to achieve.

STEP 2

Survey and Design Concepts

We survey the garden, record measurements, note level changes and identify key features. This information is used to create concept designs and a practical plan for the space.

STEP 3

Planting Design and Final Plan

Once the design direction is agreed, we can create a final plan, planting scheme and specification to guide the landscaping, planting and finishing touches.
Garden Design in detail

Initial Consultation

Every successful garden design starts with a clear understanding of both the client and the space. During the initial consultation, I walk the garden with you, discuss what you like and dislike, and explore how you want the garden to work in daily life.

This is also a chance to talk about practical considerations such as privacy, seating, planting, shade, children, pets, maintenance and budget. After the consultation, I can prepare a written design brief summarising the key ideas and priorities for your garden.

If helpful, I can also provide a mood board to explore colours, materials, planting styles and design themes before the full design work begins.

Survey and Designs

To create a considered garden design in Harpenden, I begin with an on-site survey. This includes recording measurements, level changes, existing trees, boundaries, views, access and any features that need to be kept or worked around.

This information is used to develop initial design concepts. These may include different layout options, paving ideas, seating areas, lawn shapes, planting styles, pergolas, pathways or changes to how the garden is divided and used.

Once you have reviewed the concepts and shared feedback, I can produce a final design and specification. This gives Herts Tree & Garden or your chosen landscaper a clear plan to work from when transforming the space.

Planting Design and Plan

A well-planned planting scheme can completely change the feel of a garden. I create planting designs that suit the conditions of your garden, including soil type, aspect, shade, drainage and the level of maintenance you are comfortable with.

Planting plans can be created as part of a full garden design or as a standalone service if your layout already works but the borders need refreshing. I can recommend trees, hedging, shrubs, perennials and seasonal planting to bring colour, structure and year-round interest.

Using specialist garden design software, I can provide a clear planting plan with images, quantities, spacing and care notes. I also work with a trusted local trade nursery to help keep plant sourcing practical and cost-effective.
